SMTP_LEFT_DOT_NEVER_DOMAIN=1

There was an R6 (?) Notes.ini setting for this very problem. The setting to add to notes.ini is:

SMTP_LEFT_DOT_NEVER_DOMAIN=1

You might give it a try...
